Greetings Earthlings,
I’m currently sat in the back of my Mum’s car with my Mum and Nana in the front on the way back from the Knitting and Stitching Show in Harrogate. I’ve just polished off a ham and cheese toastie from Costa and now here I am, feeling all professional and writing on the go. As you’ve probably guessed by the little intro and the title, today’s post is about our trip to Harrogate. So, let’s grab a cuppa and crack on…
I very much come from a family of creative’s, I have a quilted blanket from my Nana when I was little, and a patchwork knitted blanket from my Mum and have had countless cardigans made for me over the years. Hence, in my younger years I asked to be taught how to knit several times by my Mum and Nana separately and they taught me, time and time again and I never seemed to pick it up. What a disappointment, eh? But when I started university I joined the Knit Like Your Nana society, and have since made a bunny and trust me when I say it is a big bloody achievement. I love being, and always thought “wouldn’t it be cool to make your own cardigans, ones that no one else will have?”. I may still only be a beginner, in every sense of the term but when I heard about the Knitting and Stitching show I wanted to have a wander. Who doesn’t love a good wander around some stalls?
Flash forward to today and we’re on our way, I didn’t know what to expect about Harrogate itself. I mean, I have no clue whereabouts it is, but I know that they go there quite a bit on Look North. Anyway, it has lots of lovely little buildings that I enjoyed looking at whilst we followed the instructions from Google maps. Once we arrived, I was quite shocked as to the fact it initially looked like just a hall because I was expecting something a lot bigger. However, I really surprised me there were various halls that led on to various halls and a big picnic area in the show section which was surrounded by wonderful artwork of many, many moons ago.
As we were wandering I particularly loved going past a stall and hearing the passion in the voices of the stall holders and the general buzz of activity. There was so much more there than I was expecting, and I feel like I got some good buys, another note, it was also quite reasonably priced for the fact that it’s homemade and the effort that has gone into it. I hope to return next year! But currently, I have some mini projects to work on and keep me busy for now and some general “treat yourself” bits. I’ll list them right here: got myself some dusty pink wool to attempt to knit a scarf, a deluxe starter kit to make pom poms with a fancy multiple pom pom maker and it is very exciting (!!!), a needle felt kit to make two Santa’s because it’s very nearly Christmas, a lovely scarf, some fudge for Jack because I’m obviously the best, an amazing hand crafted hair grip that a lady had made who live in Japan and came all the way to Harrogate for the Knitting and Stitching Show which I thought was incredible and a little Lucet knitting tool which I’m excited to use. All in all, we’ve had a successful and lovely day and I’ve decided I should probably just drop out of uni and be creative forever.
I do love seeing people at stalls and selling the stuff they’ve made and how people compliment them, and it really makes their day. I think it’s a wonderful thing. It’s a step out of reality and into a magical little crafty world. I 100% recommend you going.
